Stroke Research

"Evening view of Cardiff City Centre near RSU"

There are on-going studies worldwide to help us better understand the process of brain damage in stroke, the mechanisms of stroke risk factors, new and better ways to assist brain repair in order to restore brain functions as well as the role of genetics in stroke.

There are also continuing research to uncover the potentials of several promising drugs that can protect the brain or reverse any damage in the early stages of a stroke. The use of advances in brain imaging has helped guide stroke treatment and rehabilitation for stroke survivors.

We are also involved in stroke research and multi-centre clinical trials in collaboration with other medical institutions and drug companies that helped to improve and develop better treatments for stroke. In Cardiff, the Principal Investigator is Dr.Hamsaraj Shetty (Consultant Physician) and supported by Dr.M Muzaimi as his Research Fellow.

Before any research can start, a Regulatory Body and an Ethics Committee will assess and check details and study design involved for the medical intervention (example: a drug)  that being tested.

In the UK, an approval is required from the MHRA (Medicines and Health Regulatory Agency). This regulatory agency assesses all clinical studies and look at the properties of the drug, dosage chosen, any side effects and various other aspects of the research.

The Ethics Committee is an independent group of individuals that may include doctors, pharmacists, nurses, but also non-medical persons. They involve in reviewing the study protocol, all related study documents (such as the information sheets that are given out to you) and the background of the doctors and/or nurses that are doing the research. They will ensure that the study has in place robust protection of your rights, safety and confidentiality.

In addition to the above approvals, clinical studies involvind human participants are also governed by particular laws, codes of practice and guidelines.
