Other Related Services for Stroke/TIA Patients

Stroke Prevention Clinic, University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff

General information:

Since its inception in 2004, this clinic deals with patients who have symptoms that may be due to a stroke or TIA. An average of 30 patients per week are seen following referrals, either as new patients for further assessment or as follow-up after being discharge from the hospital to review patients' progress.

Patients who are referred to the clinic usually reside in central Cardiff and live within the health catchment areas of the University Hospital of Wales. The clinic is led by Dr. HGM Shetty, Consultant Physician with specialist interest in stroke and run on Tuesday and Wednesday at Suite 17, the Outpatient Department, University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

Referrals to the Stroke Prevention Clinic:

Referrals to the clinic come from the local general practitioners (GP) and from other doctors at the University Hospital of Wales.

At present, the referral system in place utilises a written letter or standardised referral slip which is hand-delivered, mailed or faxed for the attention of Dr. HGM Shetty. Following this, you will then be advised of an appointment, either by post and/or telephone call.

Wherever possible, we aim to complete certain tests required on the day of the clinic visit. You may spend between two to three hours at this appointment. The clinic doctor often makes a further appointment for you return to clinic to discuss the test results and treatments with you.

After this clinic visit, the doctor will write a letter your GP and any other doctor involved in your care. The letter will describe what happened in the clinic and provide treatment suggestions.

We are planning to introduce E-referral form for ease of use by other hospital doctors to refer patients to help us streamline the referral information and improve patient care. To date, this E-referral is under further review and construction.
