Stroke/TIA As Medical Emergency
We now know more about how the damage occurs to the brain following a stroke. It is important to get a treatment for stroke as quickly as possible since stroke can cause death or disability. The quicker someone gets the appropriate treatment, the more is the chance to prevent further damage and any potential disability as a result of stroke.
Many people do not see that stroke is a medical emergency. This lack of awareness and knowledge about stroke contributes to the delay in getting treatment and preventing strokes. It is recognised that people in poorer areas and of certain ethnic groups (Asian and Black) are more likely to suffer from strokes than those from affluent areas or White people. The key step to raise the awareness and to act quickly is to recognise the main symptoms of stroke.
