Assisting Stroke Services And Enhancing Treatment

"Help Us Improve and Enhance Stroke Services in Cardiff and The Vale"

The ASSET Appeal has been established to raise money for Stroke Services within Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust. Projects funded by the appeal will be used to enhance the experience of patients in acute stroke care and rehabilitation services. The appeal also aims to raise awareness for the ongoing support required by those individuals who have suffered from strokes, and to promote a positive message that there is life after stroke.

Chair of ASSET, Andy McCann, a former PE Teacher, who himself suffered a stroke at the age of 37, received care from the Trust at the University Hospital of Wales. Andy’s story has been a great inspiration for many stroke sufferers as he has since set up his own successful business and written a book which offers advice on how to deal with recovery which draws upon his personal experiences. As a result, he was awarded the UK Stroke Association’s ‘Adult Courage Award’ for 2007.

As Andy explains,

For those who survive a stroke, for their families and loved ones, at best, life is suspended and a considerable length of time may be spent in hospital.

Strategically, ASSET is directly concerned with enhancing patient care during this difficult time which can itself lay the foundations for the message that there can be life after a stroke.
